Famous people of the world Gilbert Baker (June 2, 1951 – March 31, 2017) was an American artist, designer, and activist, best known as the creator of the rainbow flag.

Baker was born on June 2, 1951, in Chanute, Kansas.He grew up in Parsons, Kansas, where his grandmother owned a women's clothing store. His father was a judge and his mother was a teacher. Baker served in the United States Army from 1970 to 1972.

Baker first created the Rainbow Flag with a collective in 1978.He refused to trademark it, seeing it as a symbol that was for the LGBT community.In 1979, Baker began work at Paramount Flag Company in San Francisco, then located on the southwest corner of Polk Street and Post Street in the Polk Gulch neighborhood. Baker designed displays for Dianne Feinstein, the Premier of China, the presidents of France, Venezuela, and the Philippines, the King of Spain, and many others. He also designed creations for numerous civic events and San Francisco Gay Pride. In 1984, he designed flags for the Democratic National Convention.

In June of 1994, Gilbert achieved a world’s record when he created a mile-long Rainbow Flag to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Stonewall Riot 1969 in New York City. The banner measured 30 x 5,280 ft. and was carried by 5,000 people. The project was underwritten by Stadtlander’s Pharmacy.

In June of 1994, Gilbert achieved a world’s record when he created a mile-long Rainbow Flag to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Stonewall Riot 1969 in New York City. The banner measured 30 x 5,280 ft. and was carried by 5,000 people. The project was underwritten by Stadtlander’s Pharmacy.


In 2003, to celebrate the Rainbow Flag’s 25th anniversary, Baker broke his own world record by creating a gigantic flag for Key West Pride. The banner was 1 and one-quarter miles long, and stretched sea to sea from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean. The flag was cut into sections that were distributed to more than 100 cities around the world. The project was underwritten by Absolut Vodka. The Key West flag was chronicled in the documentary “Rainbow Pride,” directed by Marie Jo Ferron, and screened at film festivals and on public television.

The colors on the rainbow flag reflect the diversity of the LGBT community. When Baker raised his first rainbow flag on the San Francisco Pride on June 25, 1978, it consisted of eight symbolic colors: pink, red, orange, yellow, green, and purple. By 2021, the most common option will have six lines, with red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. Baker called this version of the flag a "commercial version" because it arose out of practical considerations of mass producti

On March 31, 2017, Gilbert Baker passed away in his sleep at home. At the time, he had been planning for a trip back to his childhood home in Parsons, Kansas. There, he was to be honored at the first annual Gilbert Baker Film Festival at Labette Community College.
