Lesson aim: to recognize the kinds of attitude commonly held towards other cultures

Objectives:

Learning Outcomes:




  • to give Ss an opportunity to explore what the term GM food means at this lesson by several activities and reading a scientific passage and exploring their own ideas on the term

  • to focus students’ attention on the usage of prepositions and collocations.

By the end of the lesson the Ss will have



  • an understanding of the terms GM food in this lesson;

  • compare and evaluate different arguments in real life

Introduction
(10 min)

Revision. The previous topics are revised by answering questions
Warming up. “Pre-reading activities”
Brainstorming. Teacher writes 2 questions on the blackboard and asks Students to answer the questions

  • What is GM food?

  • Is it healthy or not? How and why?

Students in pairs brainstorm their ideas on the questions.

Activity 1. Matching the words in the left-hand column with the meanings in the right-hand column (20 min.).
Teacher gives Handout 1 to Students and tells them to read and match the words.
Teacher organizes the whole group discussion to check the Students’ understanding, asks questions.
Activity 2. Find the answers to these questions in the text.

Activity 3. Reading the text. Comprehension check. (15 min.).
Teacher gives Handout 2 to Students, explains the task and tells Students to do it individually first, then to compare with their partners.

Teacher organizes a whole group discussion and encourages Students to participate actively in it.



Activity 4. Vocabulary Work. (25 min.).
Teacher writes the new words and phrases on the board. Teacher asks any volunteer to say how they use or make up sentences with such phrases. After several Students have spoken, Teacher tells the class that the words are from the text and explains their definition.
Teacher explains the task to the Students, tells that they are going to complete two tasks.
Handout 5. Complete these sentences using an appropriate preposition
Teacher gives Handout 3 to each member of the groups.
When everyone has finished, Teacher asks each group to report their reactions and revisions of one or two of the statements.
Discussion: What are the arguments for and against GM foods?


Students read, discuss the passage and take part in the whole group discussion.

Students share their opinion about attitudes.

Students answer the given questions

Students work individually, then in groups, complete the tasks A and B, discuss the answers in groups.

Students report back about their findings.

Students share thier answers.



Closure
(5 min)

Teacher asks Students to give a summary of the lesson.


Teacher assesses the groups and gives home-task to take photos on different statements walking in street and bring them for the whole group discussion

Students work individually and give a summary of the lesson. Students write down their homework
