TIPS FOR LEXICOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF THE TEXT


the scheme of lexicoloGical analysis



  1. Explain the choice of the vocabulary in connection with the contents and the type of the text (narration, description, commentary, dialogue, monologue, mixed form; literary, poetic, bookish, colloquial, jargon, etc.)

  2. Comment on the morphemic structure of the longest words in the text. Find free, bound, root, non-root, derivational, inflectional and other types of morphemes. Comment on the derivational structure of the words of the text. Find simple, derived, compound, compound-derived stems.

  3. Find words formed by affixation. In affixal words find productive and non-productive affixes, native, borrowed, living and dead and other types of affixes.

  4. Identify words made by conversion or having converted pairs in the vocabulary, if they are not in this text.

  5. Find words made by compounding; define their types and classes (coordinative, subordinative, motivated/non-motivated, etc.)

  6. Find words made by shortening? Define their typres: abbreviations, acronyms, clippings, their types.

  7. Find words formed by minor types of word-formation, such as blending, back-formation, sound and stress interchange, etc. Find words belonging to the word-clusters.

  8. Find polysemantic words and explain in which of their meanings they are used in the text. Analyse the nature, causes and results of the semantic change with the help of componential analysis.

  9. Find synonyms in the text and indicate the difference between them. Analyse them according to the existing classifications (ideographic and stylistic synonyms; contextual synonyms, etc.).

  10. Find antonyms; give their classification (contraries, contradictories, root and derivational antonyms).

  11. Find homonyms in the text; give their classification (homophones, homographs, grammatical and lexico-grammatical homonyms, etc.).

  12. Find unusual words, neologisms, archaisms, nonce-words, euphemisms, etc.

  13. Find international words; give their versions in your native language.

  14. Find phraseological units in the text give their classification and define their functions. Look for proverbs and sayings or their clippings in the text.

  15. Give examples of words’ etymology – borrowed and native. Find out the language they came from (origin and source), degree of assimilation of the borrowed words (fully or partially assimilated words, barbarisms).
