Abstract:
One of the important goal of education is helping students to learn and 
increase their knowledge. Today's students need to learn a number of techniques that will 
not only provide better learning opportunities, but will also help them make decisions, find 
solutions to problems, and help learners become more self-directed. In this process, 
teachers use a variety of resources, information, games, and digital technologies to give 
essential knowledge for the needs of learners and increase their interest for learning.
During the learning period, students face various difficulties and refuse to accept new ideas 
and information. Therefore, by teaching how to deal with problems, learners can assess 
their own goals and find solutions to any problems they face. This article discusses the 
challenges and examples of problem-based learning in the middle grades.

Originally, problem-based learning was used in medical field and business curricula. 
But now different educational fields also apply to PBL in aside range of disciplines. 
Problem-based learning (PBL) is a student-centered approach in which students learn about 
a subject by working in small groups to solve a problem. This problem is what drives the 
motivation and the learning. We need PBL because it is good way to think critically, 
broaden way of thinking and self-esteem. The principal idea behind this is that the starting 
point for learning should be a problem, a query, or a puzzle that the learner wishes to solve 
(Davis & Harden, 1998; Harden & Davis, 1999). Learning goals are to be formulated by 
consensus, and new information is to be learned by self-directed study, which ends with 
group discussion and evaluation (Smits et al.,2002). According to Nilson (2010) " A well-
designed PBL project provides students with the opportunity to develop skills related to 
working in teams, managing projects and holding leadership roles, oral and written 
communication, self-awareness and evaluation of group processes, working independently, 
critical thinking and analysis, explaining concepts, self-directed learning, applying course 
content to real-world examples, researching and information literacy, problem solving 
across disciplines. By the views of Nilson, it is clear that PBL method is beneficial for 
students as it is mainly student-centered approach, encourages learners to enjoy and 
understand better, as well as, it improves lifelong skills. Besides, this method is also useful 
for teachers in order to grab student's attention, to urge learners to study more and do some
