IND 008 , Yorit & Aviram Rozin, Tamil Nadu. Our main project is the reforestation of 70 acres of severely eroded land. We are working to re-create the Tropical Dry Evergreen Forest indigenous to our area. This forest type is found only in Southern India and Sri Lanka and provides a rare biological richness due to its very high species abundance (over 1000 species of trees, shrubbery and liana). The Tropical Dry Evergreen Forest is now close to total extinction as only 0.01% survives. This is a last moment effort to keep this very rich and beautiful Forest on earth. Our experience with volunteers has been very positive. Volunteers from all over the world create here a dynamic community atmosphere. Living and sharing in a communal atmosphere brings us in harmony with nature and with ourselves. One of our volunteers put it very nicely in her letter to us when she left, "May there be many forests to grow people”.We are happy to welcome volunteers here any time of the year and always have plenty of space for them.We are fully committed to accept everyone that wishes to volunteer here and help recreate the forest. IND 027 Approximately 10 years ago Mr Bruce, a professional musician from Australia, left behind friends, family and an easy-going life-style to begin an incredible segment of his life’s journey at Tapovan in a remote, arid area of Maharashtra, India. Convinced about the efficacy of daily practice of an ancient Ayurvedic healing fire technique to restore the balance of Nature, Bruce pioneered a project which demonstrated in a practical way the transformational healing effects of Agnihotra (copper pyramid healing fire practiced exactly at sunrise and sunset daily) in extremely adverse conditions. During the past 10 years of his stay, the dry, rocky, depleted soil in Tapovan has blossomed into an oasis of fruit, nut and flower trees, Ayurvedic medicinal herbs, eastern and western culinary herbs, vegetables, grains, pulses, etc, all without the use of chemical pesticides or fertilizers. Tapovan consists of 15 acres of land, much of which is under cultivation with various seasonal crops in addition to the orchards. At the moment we are growing the monsoon crops: cotton, millet, sesame, green and black gram, chilies. We also have a sprinkling of Ayurvedic healing herbs such as: lemon grass, citronella, shatavari, aloe vera, etc.The Tapovan farm is completely organic. No agro-chemicals of any kind are used. Instead we use the ash from Agnihotra and the other Yajnya fires as a means of enriching the soil and balancing the pH. Also we regularly spray the foliage of all crops and trees with Agnihotra ash/water solution for pest control and plant nutrition. This gives a boost to the organic compost fertilization program. Many vegetables, herbs, trees and flowers are being germinated in our nursery using Homa Therapy techniques (seeds are treated with cow urine, cow dung and Agnihotra ash). All fruit, vegetables and herbs grown at Tapovan have an absolutely wonderful flavour. We believe this to be a result of the healing energy from the Yajnya fires. "Life in Tapovan has been both rewarding and challenging as we have bridged the gap between the so-called "civilized" culture of the west and the so-called "backward" culture of the simple village life of rural India in which we found ourselves. Learning to use what was available from bullock carts for transport, simple hand tools for farming, pumping drinking water from wells, having no guaranteed power supply, no newspapers, no TV, life was lived at a grass-roots level with a growing connectedness to Nature. Often feared "pests" of Nature such as cobras, centipedes, scorpions are now considered companions who in turn extend respect to the human beings who have moved in on their former territory. Non-violence is a way of life at Tapovan and one of the side-effects of daily practice of Agnihotra is that the Nature kingdom comes into perfect balance so there is no need to control’ it. Many include farmers who have finally realized that using chemicals is totally destructive and see Homa farming as the solution The sad side is many farmers in these drought stricken areas commit suicide as they cannot see a way out when their land will no longer produce. Vedas, the ancient wisdom of the East, confirm the connection between the Homa healing fires and attracting nutritional rains, which has been borne out by our experience at Tapovan. Here we have regularly observed rain in Tapovan but none in other nearby areas. "Tapovan meaning a retreat in a forested area, is now home to us. Facilities are now available for simple Nature Cure treatments – mud baths, spinal and hip baths, as well as healthy vegetarian diet. Ayurvedic massage and steam baths are available in the Pancha Karma clinic."The 24 hour round-the-clock healing fire permeates the atmosphere with healing and peaceful vibrations. Up to 20 visitors can stay at Tapovan at a very moderate cost. Opportunity is provided to learn the simple techniques of Agnihotra and other healing fires (Homas) practised daily in Tapovan."We look after Tapovan on a volunteer basis and consideration will be given to like-minded interested volunteers who may wish to stay for an extended period. Opportunities are available for building eco-friendly, mud houses, growing Ayurvedic herbs, landscape gardening, vermiculture, seed saving etc

The farm measures a little more than 6.5 acres. about an acre covered with areca (betel nut) trees. The rest of the land (about 1.5 acres) can be used for growing grains and vegetables. We have a small house with three rooms and a well with good potable water. The house is connected to the electricity grid. We also have an electric irrigation pump that draws water from the river.A brief description of organic activities (crops, projects, goals, etc.) We started farming in October 2007. Our long term goal is to build a self-sustaining community using resources in an ecologically sustainable manner and not using more than our share of the world's resources. As the latter condition is hard to ascertain we would like to make the land support as many livelihoods as possible. The aim is to evolve a model of symbiosis of humans and nature and the sustainability of human communities. Organic farming naturally is the most important activity. As our farm is still very small we are now in the process of bringing under cultivation all the cultivable land (as it has been fallow for several years) and planting saplings of trees in the sloping areas. We intend to gradually replace the areca trees with other useful trees and plants. Regular work involves household work, taking care of a cow and a calf, collecting dung and leaf litter, making compost piles, sowing, planting, watering, weeding, harvesting, etc. Suggested length of stay for volunteers At least a month. There are no upper limits as it takes time for acclimatization. Accommodations (number and type) We have a bathroom outside with no running water, and a composting toilet. Currently we can comfortably accommodate two volunteers. Having more is subject to the consent of all the volunteers. Developing small-scale rural technologies that are ecologically benign, value addition to local produce and generating rural employment are also on the agenda of the community..# Expectations of work for volunteers ; Volunteers are expected to share such work. Anyone with special skills such as construction, carpentry, pottery and renewable energy may focus more on such work. IND 043 Farm name Vasudha Ni Vadi Contact name -Purvi Vyas, Gujarat, India about 40kms from Ahmedabad. Most of the agricultural land in this area is used for Rice and Wheat plantation. The land is irrigated by canals and therefore many areas are now waterlogged and have degree of salinity. A brief description of organic activities (crops, projects, goals, etc.) We have about 7acres of land. 1 acre of land is used for growing fruits and vegetables and it also has a vermicomposting unit. The rest of the land is used for rice, wheat and fodder (for cattle) plantation. We have a small dairy unit where we house a few buffaloes and cows. We moved to the farm because we believe that the quality of life is better here, to retain an oasis of rural tranquility in an ever-changing world. We are seeking to build social, economic and ecological connections and interdependencies - the way life used to be. We are determined to create a working organic farm based on the principles of self reliance and self sufficiency. Everything done on the farm seeks to enhance, restore and conserve nature. At the moment the farm is completely self sufficient as far its food requirements are concerned. The next step is energy. We intend to set up a Biogas Unit soon. And then in future, solar panels and wind mill to meet our energy requirements. We are continually coming up with ideas and implementing them when funds allow. We welcome good company and would love to share our experiences with people interested in sustainable living. Suggested length of stay for volunteers We suggest the volunteers visit us any time between October and July. Volunteers can decide for themselves how long they wish to stay but, we believe that a week or less would be sufficient time for to spend on the farm. Accommodations (number and type) At the moment we do not have any special separate accommodation for the volunteers. We welcome them to live with us, in our home. We want the volunteers to experience a real local village, whilst maintaining their comfort. We wish that at a given time 2-4 people come. More at the same time will be difficult to accommodate, but if they are willing to live together in a hall or rough it out in the open then, they are more than welcome. We however, are planning to build 2 rooms for volunteers. But this is not going to be possible till end of next year. on-farming opportunities/ activities (alternative construction/ restoration project, alternative energy, etc.) Projects in different areas of sustainable living are continually being devised and implemented when funds allow therefore we welcome people with any kind of knowledge that would help us in this endeavor. For example we want to create an herb garden and if someone who has knowledge in this area and is interested to take up the project they are more than welcome. Alongside, we are planning buildings made of bamboo and mud so those with natural building experience are welcome. We also want to dig a pond and start a fisheries project. Besides Farming we have a vermicomposting unit and we have cattle so volunteers if interested, can help in these two areas as well. We are open to new ideas and willing to learn from all. We too, have a lot of new ideas but, again do not always have knowledge or the in depth understanding required to implement them. So any new approaches or ideas that volunteers have will be welcomed by us. Expectations of work for volunteers Guests are welcome to interact as much as or as little as they wish.
