West Valley United has officially applied for the Drug-Free Communities (DFC) Support Program which is a federal youth-based substance abuse prevention grant. The grant submission was successful and on-time.
-
We should here back within the next month on whether or not it will go to peer review. The award notification will be announced sometime in August or September 2011.

2011 Calendar of Events & Crash Car Schedule
-
Three of our four stand-up signs have been printed/delivered and were on display during our coalition meeting. It was decided that two additional signs would be created and printed with visuals of the crash-car so the signs can stand alone without being next the car itself.
-
The next crash-car event will be at the south town expo center for a police safety fair. Learning for Life also scheduled the car for a 3-day Family Safety Event at camp Tracy.

Planning &Developing a Media Campaign
| -
One of the biggest contributing factors to drinking and driving behaviors is the lack of perceived risk of getting caught and lack of perceived risk of harm from crashing. In order to change this community norm, we have decided to plan and implement a community media campaign that will focus on the following components:
-
We Will Promote the Consequences:
-
Provide Statistics (# of DUI’s, # Crashes, Average Price for Taxi vs DUI etc)
-
DUI’s are expensive, lose your job, transportation hassle
-
We Will Utilize Current Campaign Messages:
-
Over the Limit, Under Arrest
-
Zero Fatalities
-
Parents Empowered
-
We will Utilize the Following Delivery Methods to Promote our Prevention Message:
-
We will place coasters @ Restaurants/Bars/Clubs
-
Restroom Signs @ Restaurants/Bars/Clubs/Events with Alcohol
-
Stickers @ Convenience Stores
-
Informational Brochures from Parents Empowered will be sent home with students in West Valley City Schools.
-
We will host a series of West Valley City journal articles
-
We will maintain a presence at community events: Tabling, Health Fairs, WestFest, National Night Outs, Valley Fair Mall, etc
-
We will continue to show-case the Coalition’s Crash Car at various locations and events each month.
