TEACHING ENGLISH TO YOUNG LEARNERS: 
BENEFITS AND DRAWBACKS

Abstract. 
The age to start learning L2 has been decreasing the past 30 years. Our parents started learning 
L2 in secondary school. The generation of children born after 2004 started it in the 1st grade. And now 
there is a widespread practice to start learning a foreign language at preschool. This paper will critically 
review Critical Period Hypothesis and Krashen’s theory of Second Language Acquisition and Affective Filter 
as a basis for early start of learning L2
.
Introduction
Early start of learning English has become an unstoppable trend. In the past 15 years, age policy in 
teaching English has been changing in many countries. In post-soviet countries like Russia, Ukraine, 
Georgia and Uzbekistan students start English from the first grade of primary school, in Kazakhstan from 
second grade. In countries such as Poland, Hungary and Croatia, where a choice of foreign languages 
is offered at primary level, English is overwhelmingly the first choice (Enever and Moon, 2009; Nikolov, 
2009b). Countries like Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong go even further making English lessons obligatory 
in preschools. 
What is behind the change in attitude to learning English? As Crystal (1997) asserts, “A language 
achieves a genuinely global status when it develops a special role that is recognized in every country” (p. 
2). High proficiency in English has become an essential instrument in building a successful career as well as 
a feature of a highly-qualified specialist. Thus, the widespread assumption among parents that the younger 
the better (Y. Hu, 2007; Nunan, 2003) has started to be accepted as true.
