Homonyms

Two or more words identical in sound and spelling but different in meaning are called homonyms.

Ex. Ball – bal (raqs turi) ball – koptok

Toast – nonni yog’da qovurmoq

Toast – o’tirishlarda gapirmoq

Rose – roza, atif gul

Rose – qizning ismi

Sound – tovush

Sound - quyulish

Bark – kuchukning vovullashi

Bark – suzayotgan kema

Homonyms must be studied diachronically and synchronically. Diachronically we study the origin of homonyms, the sources of homonyms, the time of their appearance in the languages. Synchronically we analyse the present pecularities of homonyms, their classification ets.

Homonyms are classified into:

1) Homonyms proper;

2) homophones;

3) homographs.

Homonyms proper are words identical in pronunciation and spelling and different in meaning.

Ex. Fast – quickly, fast – to do smth. quickly.

Homophones are words of the same sound form but of different spelling and meaning.

Ex. Air – havo him - hymn

Heir - voris knight - night

Pail – chelak piece - peace

Pale – oqargan write - right

Son – o’g’il see - sea

Sun – quyosh read - reed

Pray – prey

Homographes are words which are different in sound and meaning but identical in spelling.

Ex. Lead [li:d] lead [ led]
