interest in the problems relations of language units and the construction of a coherent speech
arose even among the ancient philosophers and logicians. since the ancient times, combinatorial
problems began to attract the attention of native and foreign language researchers.
The development of the combinatorial direction in modern times was stimulated by the
appearance at the beginning of the 20th century. structuralism, within which the concept of
syntagmatics arose - compatibility based on the linear relations of language units. syntagmatic
and paradigmatic relations are considered as two main types of relations between the signs of
the language. units of syntagmatics - syntagmas - internally connected series of consecutive
units, components that make up individual words, phrases, sentences. currently, the problems
of combinatorial linguistics are acquiring special relevance due to the fact that the need for
teaching language norms, the culture of speech is developing, the problem of new formations
in the language (which is largely due to the factor of lexeme compatibility) is being updated,
the study of the components of lexical meaning is reaching a new level. words and the study of
the compatibility of these components, which allow you to combine words to achieve certain
goals (the formation of various connotations, the creation of expressive word usage, etc.).
combinatorial linguistics acquires great importance in connection with the tasks of teaching
foreign languages. all this indicates the need to generalize the achievements of combinatorial
linguistics and determine its status as a separate linguistic direction. The theoretical and practical
material on syntagmatics is accumulated over several centuries by the beginning of the XX
century and prepared the basis for the emergence and formation of such teachings as syntagmatic
theory, valence theory, theories of compatibility.
lexicology is the part of linguistics that studies words. This branch of linguistics learns nature
and function as symbols, meaning, the relationship of their meaning to epistemology in general,
and the rules of their composition from smaller elements. lexicology also involves relations
between words, which may involve semantics, derivation, use and sociolinguistic distinctions,
and any other issues involved in analyzing the whole lexicon of a language. The term first
appeared in the 1970s, though there were lexicologists in essence before the term was coined.
one of the very close sciences to lexicology is lexicography, which also studies words, but
mainly in relation with dictionaries – it is concerned with the inclusion of words in dictionaries
and from that perspective with the whole lexicon. sometimes lexicography is considered to be
a part or a branch of lexicology, but properly speaking, only lexicologists who write dictionaries
are lexicographers. some consider this a distinction of theory vs. practice. a familiar example
of lexicology at work is that of dictionaries and thesauri. dictionaries are books, computer
programs, or databases that represent lexicographical work and are opened and purposed for
public use.
