Stage III.
 Say to participants that there are 2 short texts on Handout 3 from Fly High English 6 and English Matters 8.
 Explain that participants should read the instructions to the texts and look through the texts quickly to understand better these instructions.
 Ask participants to find the text which instruction uses skimming and scanning. Give them 2 minutes. Give out Handout 3.
 Check the answers.
Answer Key: Text B (Question 1. to the text uses skimming, question 2. - scanning).
Stage IV.
 Say that the instruction to the text B has question 3 which is ‘give synonyms to the words in bold’. Say that when we ask our pupils to read a text to find synonyms, antonyms, some grammar constructions, we use the technique which is called ‘intensive reading’. Write the word ‘intensive’ on Bb.
 Ask participants why to use intensive reading.
Possible answer:
To help pupils understand a text deeply, to see all details connected with grammar and vocabulary.
 Ask participants the following questions:
1) Which reading technique helps pupils understand all the details of a text?
2) Which reading techniques can we find in the text B?
Answer Keys: 1) Intensive reading. 2) Skimming (question 1), scanning (question 2), intensive reading (question 3).
Stage V.
 Ask participants which teaching techniques and activities for reading they know now.
Answer Key: Skimming, scanning, intensive reading.
 Ask participants:
1) Can we ask pupils to skim text A?
2) Can we ask pupils to scan text A?
Answer Keys: 1), 2) are positive. Note that a teacher may use different techniques to help his/her pupils understand the texts better.
 Ask participants why it is important to know and use these techniques.
