Stage V.
Ask participants which teaching techniques and activities for reading they know now.
Answer Key: Skimming, scanning, intensive reading.
Ask participants:
1) Can we ask pupils to skim text A?
2) Can we ask pupils to scan text A?
Answer Keys: 1), 2) are positive. Note that a teacher may use different techniques to help his/her pupils understand the texts better.
Ask participants why it is important to know and use these techniques.
Possible answers:
Instead of asking all pupils to read the same text again and again, a teacher can use a variety of techniques. As a result, a lesson will be interesting and effective, because pupils will be able to understand the text better.
Sum up the stage saying that teachers should use as many teaching techniques as possible, because they will help their pupils improve their reading skill.
Stage VI.
Say to participants:
- Now let’s play a game. You will get Handout 4 with information about teaching techniques. You already know this information. In pairs you’ll check how well you know teaching techniques for reading. Get pairs into A, B.
Say to participants:
- First As will check Bs. Bs will close the second column of the table, so not to see the description and aim. As will read aloud the description and aim of any technique or activity, and Bs should name it. If Bs do it correctly then they check As in the same way. If Bs don’t do it correctly, As will check them again and again. For example, I’m a B and I close a part of the table. Any A, read aloud the description and aim.
Name a technique or an activity.
Give participants 5 minutes. Distribute Handout 4.
Stop the game. Elicit summary of this stage from participants and establish that there is a number of teaching techniques to be used in a lesson to develop reading skill.
