fective interior space (where codes allow), and support gardens, solar stacks, shading louvers 
(that also block access by burglars), shower towers, heat and water storage, vertical compost 
chutes, and light shelves and/or mirrors to bounce light in and prevent glare.

Box 5 Green Scaffolding Retrofit
Green Scaffolding wraps an ecosystem around an existing building to produce clean energy, 
air, water, soil and food. The triangular truss supports a vertical greenhouse that can hold 
continuous vertical wetlands and hanging gardens to clean air and water; shower towers and 
solar chimneys to cool the building; butterfly and frog breeding habitats (depending on build
-
ing orientation) and even bird and possum nests to support urban biodiversity, and vertical 
composters to treat organic waste. Continuous Trombe walls could feed heat into the (old) 
central heating system, or directly heat and cool rooms. Integrated shading and lighting systems 
can include louvers, sail cloths, light shelves, blinds, etc. Urban cooling can be achieved on 
very hot days by sprays from within the pipe truss, fed by water collected on the roof. Some 
modules could support aquaponic food production systems where fish fertilize water for the 
hydroponic plant system, accessible through windows. Such mini-biospheres would clip into 
a vertical triangular truss system. The Green Scaffolding is demountable, flexible and inter

changeable, with many possible variations to suit local conditions. The façade can be further 
articulated by decks, sunspaces or atriums.
