Would just creating the environment for creativity ensure good outcomes?
No. We have said that sustainability is a design problem, but that efforts to define sustainability 
have been shaped by old ways of thinking. Old ways of thinking either impose (ideologically based) 
visions of how people should live, or apply methods that lead to a certain kind of future through their 
own internal logic. But as discussed earlier, we do not really know what sustainability will look like.
Imposing a specific vision of society would not be consistent with sustainability. Sustainability is about 
expanding options and social equity, not implementing a particular ideology [Introduction]. After 
all, a particular conception of sustainability in a particular time and place is likely to be idiosyncratic 
or even ill-conceived. Design for sustainability therefore implies the intellectual, institutional and 
physical infrastructure that can create reversible, diverse and adaptable decisions, environments and 
eco-technologies. Roadmapping is designed to get to a preconceived goal within existing parameters, 
not to rethink the goal itself or to ensure more goals are met through design that creates synergies.
It examines the forces likely to impact on, say, product development or organizational advancement 
in a given context. A sustainability planning process would be less concerned with expediting the 
emergence of new technology through market or regulatory levers. It would be more concerned with 
determining what kind of technological, behavioural or institutional strategies will provide levers of 
influence from a whole systems – ecological and democratic – perspective. A better approach would 
be analyses that identify leverage points (or acupuncture) for systems re-design, such as RT, EW, ET, 
and CI analyses introduced earlier.
