States of the USA
There are fifty states in the USA today. But at the beginning there were thirteen states. Among them were Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Rhode Island. These states were called the New England states. They were called New England because the first colonists who landed there were from England. Massachusetts, which capital is Boston, is a key state. It is a place of culture and learning. These states of New England are not suited for agriculture but it is a wooded district with a great many rivers and lakes.
The Middle Atlantic States stretch from New England southwest to Washington, District of Columbia. Washington is the capital of the country. The Middle Atlantic States are New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware.
The advantage of this region is its position. It has important ports such as New York and Philadelphia. New York is the national leader in manufacturing, shipping industry, advertising and so on. Pennsylvania is also an important economic centre.
The South Atlantic States are Virginia and West Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina, Georgia, Florida.
The Central South-East states are Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama.
The American South-West consists of Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas and Oklahoma. This is a land of prosperous towns, cowboys and Indians and in the western parts coyotes.

The United States of America, often referred to as the United States, is a federal constitutional republic, spread over an area of 3,537,438.44 sq mi, in North America. It is flanked by the Pacific ocean and the Atlantic ocean on either sides, and bordered by Canada and Mexico in the north and south, respectively.
The United States is the 3rd largest country in the world in terms of both, the land area and population. Washington D.C. is the capital district of the nation, while New York City is the largest city. For administrative purposes, the United States is divided into 50 states; each of which shares sovereignty with the federal government.
