1.3. USING DIFFERENT TYPES OF ASSESSMENT IN LANGUAGE TEACHING

1.3.1 DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENT

Using different types of assessments in language learning and teaching play a significant role. As a teacher we can use diverse of assessing. They are testing assessment, evaluation, assessment for learning, diagnostic assessment, self and peer assessment and continuous assessment. The assessment type that I mostly use is diagnostic assessment. I think not only I but other teachers also use it frequently. Because it helps the teacher to plan the lesson organise the future to work with learners. In my lessons diagnostic assessment helps me to gather information that suits for my students and helps me to know what they know about the lesson or topic. . Diagnostic assessment are sets of written questions(multiple choice or short answers) that assess the students' current knowledge base or current views on a topic to be studied in the course. The goal is to get a snapshot of where students currently stand intellectually, emotionally or ideologically- allowing the teacher to make sound instructional choices as to how to teach the new course content and what teaching approach to use. Diagnostic assessment helps me to identify my students' strengths and weakness with regards to course content and is tied directly to the course syllabus. Using the diagnostic assessment I make decisions about the content that should be taught as well as the approach of assessing that content. If I teach how to speak English during an interview, I shall have to assess my students abilities during a spoken interview. Diagnostic assessments need to match what is expected to be taught in the course syllabus. It helps me to use class time according to my lesson plan. It is important to remember that assessment never stops or finishes. It continuous forever so it exists everywhere in everything in teaching process what a teacher does. It brings a significant change to the classroom. In other words, anything that is done by teachers before and during class can provide helpful information.
