Marriages are bigger and more expensive nowadays than in the past. Is this a positive or 
negative development?
It is true that marriage ceremonies these days are relatively extravagant as compared to 
the earlier days.
While the lavish marriage parties make the day memorable for everyone, 
but the over expenses due to the occasion lead to some troubles for the families and 
society. 
On the one hand, there are many reasons for spending money on such extravagant 
weddings. Firstly, marriages are regarded as once in a life time events and people do not 
hesitate to spend money on these unforgettable occasions which allows them to create a 
memorable and special wedding day. Secondly these occasions create community spirit as 
they provide opportunity of get together for the people which is so essential to strengthen 
social bonding in the society. Finally, they provide instant relief from worries and breaks 
the monotony of individuals and gives opportunity to share happiness with each other 
On the other hand, I believe that there are also some negative impacts of spending too 
much money on the weddings. First and foremost, people squander lot of money on such 
events which aggravate financial burden on them resulting into landing in debts and one 
day happiness turning to whole life burden.
Moreover, the conclusion of banquets give 
birth to wastage of food and other resources as huge amount of unused beverages and 
food items served adds up to garbage and the electricity is burnt in excessive amounts in 
form of lighting and music.
Last but not least, this trend of lavish ceremonies encourages 
dowry system as a result of which many parents do not prefer having a girl child and this 
further leads to female infanticide. 
In conclusion, no doubt large scale weddings satisfy people’s need to mark a special 
occasion , however this could also bring endless financial worries for organizers.
