Suggestions to the policy makers and stakeholders
It was agreed that a “Fear Free Environment” is required to be developed in
society, so that parents can agree to send their child to the school. For this purpose,
various campaigns are required at National and State level.
Special training for teachers is required to orient them to abide by all the instructions
regarding maintaining the social distancing amongst the students during school hours.
Training videos may be prepared for this purpose and IEC material should be sent to
all the schools.

To meet out the loss of teaching days because of COVID 19 pandemic, the
syllabus should be reduced by 25 to 30% so that the parents and students may not feel
the pressure of the completion of syllabus. Accordingly, NCERT may be asked to
issue guidelines in this regard.
It was observed that even after reopening of the schools, Distance Education
and Online Learning should be continued because all the students would not be able
to come to school on account of maintaining social distancing. Therefore, it should
become part of formal education during the COVID-19.
SOP for reopening of schools may be got prepared from Ministry of Health and
Family Welfare and School Management Committees (SMCs), Panchayati Raj
Institutions (PRIs), and Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) should be given the
collaborative responsibility to prepare conducive environment for reopening of
schools, so that the issues related to health and hygiene, sanitation and social
distancing may be addressed properly.
The impact of pandemic COVID-19 is uncertain and has left countries
grappling with uncertainties. Various public health measures all over the world have
been implemented to reduce associated illness severity and mortality. Countries are
now coming out of ‘lockdown’ with cautious optimism with measures such as social
distancing, quarantine and closure of public places including schools. However, the
challenges related to the impact on students’ mental health continue beyond this
phase of the pandemic. This paper highlights key issues and offers practical solutions
to address the mental health of adolescents during COVID-19 pandemic, from a
secondary school student’s (SSS) perspective.
