Discussion 
COVID-19 pandemic came out as the most devastating and challenging crisis 
for public health in the contemporary world. Apart from the soaring mortality rate, 
nations across the globe have also been suffering from a spike of the excruciating 
psychological outcomes, i.e., anxiety and depression among people of all ages. 
School students are no exception, as all the educational institutions are 
unprecedentedly closed for more than a usual period of time, and in Haryana, it is 
now more than five months in a row. Such closure, in general, triggers a sense of 
uncertainty about academic and professional career among the students and 
intensifies persistent mental health challenges among them. Given such 
circumstances, the main goal of this study was to investigate the prevalence of 
depression and anxiety among the Haryana school students during the COVID-19 
pandemic and to explore the factors influencing the presence of depression and 
anxiety disorder. 
The findings in the survey indicate that government school students and the 
ones in rural areas, are in a stronger mental health conditions than private school and 
urban school students. This calls for a concern for the urban as well as private school 
children. The city lifestyle and comforts seem to be weakening the students to cope 
up with adverse circumstances.

It has been well accepted that living with families strongly generates 
reassurance among the individuals, therefore, reduces depression and anxiety. 
Because positive family environment often benefits the mental health of the 
vulnerable youth experiencing depression or anxiety. However, this pandemic has 
brought extreme financial pressure on families. Most of the families have been 
suffering from unmanageable debts and a decline in income, thus, leaving the family 
members in a traumatized situation. The results of this study suggests that despite 
living with family, anxiety and depressive symptoms have been increasing among 
students mainly due to financial insecurity. 
In Haryana, the protective interventions, such as wearing mask or using the 
personal protective equipment, are yet to be enforced largely due to limited 
awareness or much carelessness. Hence, the government opted to implement the 
state-wide lockdown. Most of the students of grade 10th and 12th are getting 
depressed thinking they might be falling academically behind. They, however, 
reiterated that the online classes could not fulfil their requirements and a significant 
percentage of the students are still out of the reach of the online class.
The results in this study stressed on the fact that the nation-wide lockdown in India is 
going to cause a significant disruption in the academic programs and create a gap in 
both teaching and learning. The academic delays could have long-term impacts on the 
psychology of students as they are more likely to be passed later than they have 
expected. In this regard, teachers, as well as parents, should stay connected with the 
students/children using direct possible contact or social media platforms and motivate 
them to move forward together during this difficult time. 
Apart from the issues mentioned above, this study found no significant differences 
between male and female students with relation to depression or anxiety, thus 
complement previous studies. However, Egyptian research remarked that female 
students are more likely to suffer anxiety and less prone to depression than male 
students.
