The first sentence...what does the narrator suggest when he states that they do not go to the war anymore?
He is injured therefore he can not go and fight in war. There is a war going on, but they are not in it.

He has a repetition of the word boys, but later on calls them officers. The hospital is very beautiful, but is sad. They all have medals and the guy who is the most injured does not have a metal. The fencer hurt his hands.

Isolation is a major theme in all of Hemingway's novels. Sea= the vast unknown, unpredictable, the setting is very isolated. War is very unpredictable. Older character who is in contrast of a younger character, shows the comparison of how life beats you down in ways. The isolation of the characters have to do with the title of the story because he is an American and everyone else is not. He is in another Country, fighting war.

The narrator's use of the hawk as a metaphor those who fight in the war. He may seem to be a hawk however he truly is not because he hasn't really fought.
The machines keep appearing in this story. What are these machines that are to make "all the difference"? What can we tell is the narrator's attitude toward these machines?
The machines that make "all the difference" are what are helping them recover from their injuries. The give them hope. They may physically repair, but it cannot fix mental pain. We can tell that the narrator is fearful of the machine because he is hopeful that it will fix him and then he will return to the war.

Hemingway's style is very simple and uses words that the reader will fully understand. Female is more dangerous and scary.

Hemingway's theme is the fear of the war and the lose of innocence, youth v.s age. He established this by his diction and word choice.
