Cisco’s JimAnne Baker (2002) and Refugio’s Ginger Dickerson (1988) share the (female) state record with five gold medals at one state meet. Girls who have won four gold medals at one state meet are: Ychlindria Spears of Luling (1999 & 2001), Mary Bolden of Hamlin (1981), Cynthia Jones of Frisco (1983 & 1984), Alison Callicoatte of D’Hanis (1988), Bonita Brown of Palestine Westwood (1983), Carlette Guidry of Houston Sterling (1985 & 1986), Shametra Boykins of Karnack (2001), Carolyn Amos of Marble Falls (1979) and Chimeka Carter of Groesbeck (1996). Baker is the only Texas athlete (male or female) ever to win seven different events during a career at the state track meet. In a four-year career she won the 100, 200, 400, long jump, triple jump, and 800 & 1600 relays.

MOST POINTS SCORED AT ONE STATE MEET
In recent years Toya Jones’ 45 points scored in 1993 was considered the state record for most points scored at the state meet by an individual athlete as he broke the record of Frank Pollard who scored 42 in 1976. Pollard’s record broke the record of 38 points scored by Ken Hall of Sugarland in 1952. Newspaper accounts of the 1952 state meet do not indicate that Hall’s 38 points was a state record but this “fact” seems to have been “discovered” in later years.
However, the “modern” view of the “most points scored” record ignores the period of 1905-1945 when a different point scale was used. Until 1945 the point scale--for individual events and for the two relays---was 5 points for first, 3 points for second, 2 points for third & 1 point for fourth. A new point scale was adopted for the 1946 state meet that—for individual events----gave 10 points for first, 8 points for second, 6 points for third and 4 points for fourth and--for the two relays--gave 20 points for first, 16 points for second, 12 points for third and 8 points for fourth.
Using the “modern” point scale the top point scorers for the period 1905-1952 have been “reconstructed” by Dr. Wilbanks so that a single list of top scorers can be made for 1905-2009. Given this single point scale the all-time top scorers since 1905 are Roy E. Holcomb of Belton (1909) with 64; Willis Edward Maxson of Beaumont with 61 (1912) & 60 (1911); Pat Dougherty of Belton (1909) with 58; Leo Baldwin of Wichita Falls with 48 (1922); Marion Lindsey of Timpson with 48 (1917); Clarence Parker of Ft. Worth with 48 (1907); Toya Jones of Refugio with 45 (1993); Max Anderson of Olden with 45 (1936); Toya Jones of Refugio with 44 (1994); “Mule” Frazier of Hillsboro with 43 (1918); Max Anderson of Olden with 42 (1937); Frank Pollard of Meridian with 42 (1976); Grady Tyler of Claude with 41 (1939); Virg Rabb of Smithville with 40 (1919); R. Jones of FW Masonic Home with 38 (1918); and Ken Hall of Sugarland with 38 (1952). However, it should be noted that Holcomb and Dougherty of Belton scored their 64 and 58 points at the 1909 state meet at which they had to compete against athletes from only three other teams in a “final four” team format---the only year that format was utilized. Thus Maxson’s 61 & 60 points in 1911-12 should be considered the “most points scored” record from 1905-2006.

The girls state meet began in 1972 with the 38 points scored by Kathy Jones of Baird becoming the first state record. Jones broke her own record in 1973 with 40 points, a record that was tied by several girls and then broken by Carlete Guidry of Houston Sterling in 1985 with 43. Guidry scored 48 points in 1986, a record tied by Chimeka Carter of Groesbeck in 1996.

Twenty girls have won the same event for four straight years with four (Stephanie Duke of Utopia, Chandi Jones of Bay City, Nanceen Perry of Fairfield and Ychlindria Spears of Luling) winning two events for four straight years. Lancaster’s Jerrika Chapple won the 400 meters for four consecutive years and also anchored the team’s 1600 meter relay for four consecutive years—a rare “double 4-peat”. The girls who have scored a 4-peat are listed below.

“ONE-MAN” & “ONE-WOMAN” STATE TEAM CHAMPIONS
Eight male athletes have won state team championships as “one-man” teams. The first one-man team to win a state team title was Willis Edward Maxson who scored 31 of his team’s 38 points to defeat Marlin, 31-29, for the state (all classes) team championship in 1912. Leo George scored 18 points in 1916 to give Bangs the Class B team championship over Center, 18-14. “Mule” Frazier scored 22 of his team’s 24 points in 1918 as Hillsboro defeated Franklin, 24-16 for the 1A championship. Virg Rabb scored all 20 of his team’s points to defeat Timpson, 20-11, in 1919 and win the state Class B championship. Leo Baldwin scored 23 points to give his Wichita Falls H.S. team the state Class 1A title in 1924 over Cleburne, 23-20. In 1935 Carl Fitzgerald scored all 10 of his team’s point as Barbers Hill defeated two runner-ups, 10-8, for the Class B championship. In 1936 Freeport’s Walter W. (Red) Cecil scored all of his team’s 15 points to defeat Houston San Jacinto, 15-11, for the state (all classes) team championship. The last boy to win a state championship by himself was James Segrest who scored all of his team’s 34 points in 1954 to give Bangs the state Class B “team” championship. The first girl to ever win a state championship by herself for any class was Jolanda Jones who scored 38 points for Alief Elsik to tie Dallas Carter for the 5A team championship in 1984. The only other “one-woman” champ was Bonnie Richardson, who won two state championships by herself with 42 points as a junior for 1A Rochelle in 2008 and with 38 points as a senior in 2009. She was also voted the Player of the Year in 1A basketball in 2009 and signed with Texas A&M.
