CHAMPIONS WHO HAVE HELD/HOLD STATE RECORDS
Considerable time and effort was devoted to compiling progressions of state (and conference) records for each event over the 104-year history of the state track meet so that readers could readily see a list of all the athletes who have held state (and conference) records along with the years the record was held. Such “progressions” are occasionally listed in U.I.L. records but the archives do not contain progressions for each event for the 104 years. Annual state meet programs do list the current state and conference record holder for each event but this researcher had to go thru all the annual programs to “compile” a progression of records which are listed in “STATE AND CONFERENCE RECORDS” in the APPENDIX.
An example---the “progression” for the 440-yd/400 meter dash is shown below. The progression for the overall state record in the 440/400 is followed by the progression of the record in one class (conference 1A). To make records made in yards (before 1978) are comparable with records made in meters, a conversion was made indicated by (#). To make hand-timed metric records equivalent to Fully Automatic Times (FAT) which began in 1995, another conversion was made indicated by (*). A full explanation of these conversions is given at the end of the Progression of Records. The two conversions led to some differences with this Progression of Records and the records given in the UIL Archives as the UIL has not consistently used the two conversions in the past. The 2006 program for the state track meet did incorporate the Progression of Records conversions reported in this book and thus this Progression of Records is “official” according to the U.I.L..
