The history of development
The ITIL library was commissioned by the British government in the 1980s. In the creation project UK Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency participated (CCTA).
The reason for its creation was the rapid development of IT. And besides, the lack of uniform information technology management standards that hindered interoperability and the work of government agencies and private companies.
It took about 3 years to create the document (from 1986 to 1989). In 1992 the first the book, the number of copies of which reached 30 by 1996.
From September 2000, books of the second edition began to appear in succession; released by November 2004 last seventh book. The ITIL Refresh project was immediately launched and on May 30, 2007 All five books of the third edition of ITIL V3 have been released. The last update of the third edition is out July 20, 2011.
This library is currently published by the British government agency Office of Government Commerce and is not owned by any commercial company.
