B
a
This test is not valid since it not only tests the students’ writing ability, but also presupposes
(and therefore is testing) their knowledge of issues surrounding DNA. It might, however, be
valid in an ‘English-for-science’ class, where DNA research had been a topic - but even in that
case it is testing more than just the language,
b
This item doesn’t work because both answer
a
and answer
d
are possible,
c This item/test fails on the grounds of face validity. Students would wonder why such a short test
was given.
d
This might be invalid for those students who are not natural poets - especially since it gives so
little guidance about how the task is to be done,
e
This test item is perfectly feasible, except that it gives very few parameters and so different
students might write answers of wildly differing lengths and complexity. There is then an issue
of both validity and reliability,
f
This is a strict ‘every-5th-word’ cloze test. There are many blanks that are fillable by a number
of different words (e.g.
a, j, k)
whereas others are highly predictable (e.g.
c, d, f).
Perhaps it
would be better to use a modified cloze procedure so that we could ensure good answers to the
questions.

DVD TASK FILE
Introduction
The DVD provides real-life illustrations of a number of key teaching activities and techniques
through extracts from classes and interviews with teachers.
There are ten sections on the DVD, and each section consists of two parts. First, a short film
sequence that focuses on a particular activity or technique, with extracts taken from one or more
classes. This is followed by a discussion on the topic of the film sequence between the author and
one (or two) of the teachers who appeared in the extract(s).
Each DVD section is accompanied by a series of tasks in the following pages. Some of these tasks
should be used while viewing the DVD material; others can be used for further discussion and
analysis of the topic. We recommend that you watch the film sequence and do the tasks before you
watch the discussion with the teacher(s).
An answer key (page 251) is provided after the DVD Task File for those tasks where it is possible to
provide specific or suggested answers. The symbol •" beside an exercise indicates that answers are
given for that exercise in the answer key.
The material in the DVD Task File can be photocopied for use in limited circumstances. Please see
the notice on the back of the title page for photocopying restrictions.
