Stage 4. This stage may consist of two student readings. In the first reading, the 
students may read segments of the simplified novel aloud where they could introduce 
characters and situations. In a second reading, students may focus on those parts of the 
novel that are particularly rich in dialogue, and they could play the main characters, 
like Winston, Julia, O’Brien, using appropriate gestures, intonation and facial 
expressions.
Conclusions 
Students may benefit a lot by the use of literary texts to increase linguistic and 
intercultural skills. They will be able to understand another culture and compare their 
language and culture with that of Britain, and use English outside of the school setting.
Active participation in aesthetic encounter with these cultures can become an 
educational experience that sharpens the students’ perception of their everyday worlds, 
gets them out of their skins, and enables them to actively enter into distinct worlds. In 
addition, cultural, aesthetic and narrative encounters encourage our students to act and 
think interculturally and place themselves at a critical distance from both the foreign 
culture and their own culture.
