Make the activities your own! When you use an activity, assume ownership of 
it. You should certainly adapt, change, modify, and adjust all of the activities to fit your 
own classroom, your style of teaching, your students, and your school/university [3]. 
As we mentioned in the beginning of this article our aim is to describe the 
implementation of a cultural multimedia module that centers on the simplified module 
1984” by George Orwell. This novel has been implemented at university level, and 
probably has been chosen for its relevance in understanding the role that the mass media 
play as elements of control and power, as well as for its futuristic description of a totalitarian 
society that is at times uncomfortably similar to current events in certain countries. Written 
in 1949, the novel describes in a terrifying and visionary manner the life of Winston Smith, 
the central character, who resides in Oceania, a fictitious society where citizens are reduced 
to subjects of observation and control by Big Brother, and love the freedom to think and 
express oneself are punishable by death. The main literary reading could be supplemented 
with materials from different genres so that the lesson in the EFL classroom could be

structured around the reading, listening and viewing of the material [10].
Stage 1. Students may build background knowledge about the British writer, 
George Orwell which then could proceed with a class discussion and analysis of the 
main ideas. 
Stage 2. In this stage, students may use read and listen to the simplified novel. 
Meanwhile, they may underline, outline and discuss key aspects concerning the plot, 
characters and the context.
Stage 3. This stage may concentrate on the viewing, analysis and discussion of 
the film version of Orwell’s 1984. Besides viewing the film in English, English 
subtitles may be used to reinforce and facilitate the acquisition of vocabulary and 
idiomatic expressions. Similarities and differences between the film and the book 
could be discussed by students, who could also describe their expectations prior to the 
viewing of the film.
