WILLIAM MCKINLEY—SEPTEMBER 6, 1901
What You Already Know:
He was shot by an anarchist.
What You Might Not:
Th
at it’s Leon Czolgosz, and it’s pro-
nounced CHOL-gaush. McKinley also died because his doc-
tors couldn’t fi nd the bullet. As it happened, McKinley was
shot at the Pan-American Exposition in Buff alo, New York.
Oddly enough, a short distance from where he was attacked,
an early X-ray machine was on display. Had anyone put two
and two together, fi nding the bullet would have been a cinch.
But no such luck; McKinley died after languishing in misery
for several days.
