For the teacher they are the following:
– Teachers gain valuable professional development experience 
that expands their own repertoire; 
– It fosters originality of material feed;
– The material can be updated whenever deemed necessary; 
– Students’ work is under control; 
– Watching the process of students’ performance and seeing the 
mistakes they have made teachers can track students’ progress.
– Automatic performance assessment considerably eases the 
burden of busy teachers in checking the results;
– Teachers can work on their own schedule;
– It pursues students’ self-learning outside the classroom;
It leads students to become life-long learners. 
For the student they are the following:
– It brings out empathic understanding of English; 
– It develops in students the attitudes of realness, authenticity 
and transparency; 
– Authentic video material creates a climate in which curiosity 
can be nourished and enhanced;

– Students make essential links between language learning, 
computer skills and the world beyond; 
– Teenage students, who are accustomed to computer screens, 
embrace clicking on icons or dragging texts;
– Students can work on their own schedule;
– Students control the pace of their learning;
– The computer is extremely patient and gives private feedback, 
i.e. announces if the answer is right or wrong; 
– The computer tests students on language already learnt;
– More shy students can feel free in their own environment. This 
will raise their self-esteem and their knowledge will be improving; 
– It maintains an upbeat atmosphere and playful attitude: as 
students do the tasks, they can listen to their favourite music in the 
background.
Note, as the students work on their own completing computer-
based tasks, the course helps to try a new alternative approach 
whose main idea is ‘taking the central focus away from the teacher as 
conveyer of knowledge to giving students learning experiences that 
are as realistic as possible where they play a central role’ [9, p.46].
In this case the computer provides an opportunity for students to 
be less dependent on a teacher and have more freedom to experiment 
on their own with natural language [10, p.19].
Furthermore, to teach students to work independently, gain 
and use the necessary knowledge is one of the main tasks of higher 
educational institutions. According to the state standard of Russian 
education the quality of training specialists must be obtained through 
the extension of quantity and quality of independent work [7, p. 163].
Applying the Moodle-based English video courses designed for the 
students of Science Departments of Voronezh State University ensures 
both teachers and students that it is a valid and important teaching 
and learning tool for organizing students’ self-study [4, p. 96].
However, needless to say, that teacher presence is still very 
important to students while doing the entire spectrum of computer-
based language activities. Teachers are needed to conduct review 
sessions to reinforce what has been learnt. Encouraging students to
