Copa Libertadores: Did You Know?
-
Independiente and Boca Juniors, both from Argentina, are the most successful teams with seven and six titles, respectively. Independiente won in 1964, 1965, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975 and 1984 while Boca Juniors were victorious in 1977, 1978, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2007. Peñarol, from Uruguay, was victorious five times: 1960, 1961, 1966, 1982 and 1987.
-
No teams have played in more finals than Boca Juniors (ARG) and Peñarol (URU), both teams got nine times to the finals. Besides from these two teams, other 32 went to the finals.
-
Peñarol with 37 has the most appearances of all teams in all-time ‘Copa Libertadores’. This Montevideo’s team was also the one that had more consecutive participations: 15 - from 1975 to 1979. Of all appearances, five ended in victory and 32 in defeat. Olimpia, from Paraguay, and Nacional, from Uruguay, are right behind Peñarol, within 35 appearances each.
-
In the previous 11 finals, there have been four outright wins and six matches decided on shoot-outs. A total of 101 goals, including the shoot-outs, have been scored on these finals.
-
Only five teams have won ‘Copa Libertadores’ ending unbeaten: Peñarol (1960), Santos (1963), Independiente (1964), Estudiantes (1969 and 1970), and Boca Juniors (1978). Eight teams have won ‘Libertadores’ and the National League of their countries at the same year: Peñarol (1960, 1961, 1982); Santos (1962 and 1963); Nacional (1971 and 1980); River Plate (1986 and 1996); Boca Juniors (2000 and 2003); Olimpia (1979); Argentinos Juniors (1985); Colo Colo (1995).
-
Thiago Neves, of Fluminense, is the only player who has scored a hat-trick in only one match of a final. That match happened against Liga D. Universitaria Quito, in 2008. Though he scored three times, that wasn’t enough: LDU won on shoot-outs.
-
Having winning Copa Santander Libertadores of 2009, Estudiantes, from Argentina, is four times champion of the tournament. The team was also victorious in 1968, 1969 and 1970.
-
The 2010 edition of “Copa Libertadores” will have more teams than ever, either regular and Mexican ones. There will be 40 teams over all, with 5 of them being Mexican. San Luis and Chivas Guadalajara, both from Mexico, were taken out of round-of-16 of the 2009 edition, because of the suine flu, and in 2010 they will enter the competition in the same stage they left it last year.
-
Since 1994, that will be the first time that River Plate and Boca Juniors, both from Argentina, are out of “Copa Libertadores”. Racing, from Uruguay, is the only team that will play the competition for the first time.
-
The most victorious coach of all-time ‘Libertadores’ is Carlos Bianchi, from Argentina. He conquered four titles coaching two different teams: Vélez Sarsfield (1994) and Boca Juniors (2000, 2001 and 2003). Right behind Bianchi, within three victories, is Osvaldo Zubeldía, also from Argentina, who won three titles coaching Estudiantes.
-
The most victorious countries are: Argentina, with 22 titles divided between Independiente, Boca Juniors, Estudiantes, Argentinos Juniors, Vélez Srasfield and River Plate; Brazil, with 13 titles conquered by Libertad, Santos, Internacional, Palmeiras, Cruzeiro, São Paulo, Grêmio and Vasco da Gama; Uruguay, with 8 titles, five that Peñarol won and three of Nacional.
-
At the first years of ‘Copa Libertadores da América’, only the champion teams of the National Leagues got the chance to be on the tournament. At the first edition, seven countries have participated: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, and Uruguay. On that year, Peñarol (URU) became the first champion of ‘Libertadores’ playing against Olimpia (PAR).
-
The tournament has changed its name in 1998 to ‘Copa Toyota Libertadores’ because of its official sponsor. In 2008, as the sponsor changed one more time, also did the tournament’s name, which became called ‘Copa Santander Libertadores’.
