To be

Like avoir (to have), to be (être) is a verb of great power, since it determines if someone or some-

thing is or isn’t. One could say that French is less accepting of to be, often insisting on a more 

specific verb in many phrases in which, to an inexperienced learner of French, être would seem 

quite acceptable. For example:

How are you? 



Comment allez-vous?

Remember, French verbs are more context-sensitive than their English counterpart:

I am well. 

Je vais bien.

How much is it? 



Combien ça coûte?

Here’s your passport. 



Voici ton passeport.

Here are your tennis rackets. 



Voici vos raquettes de tennis.

My sister is afraid of the dark. 



Ma sœur a peur du noir.

Mathéo is ashamed of his behaviour. 



Mathéo a honte de sa conduite.

We were very cold last winter. 



Nous avons eu très froid l’hiver dernier.

I am hot. I think I have a fever.
