We have to make something
up
to a higher standard for a reason.
A shy person who has difficulty in meeting new people might
make
her
behaviour up to a higher standard
for
the reason of her timidity. She could
become very noisy, for example, drink too much, or be too generous. She
makes up for her shyness. She compensates for her shyness by being
noisy.
Make up for means to compensate for something.

This has a completely different meaning from
make it up to you
.. The idea
is being nice to people who are higher
up
than you.
'He is always making up to the president's secretary.'
Another way of saying this is
'He is always kissing up to the president's secretary.'
There are yet other less polite expressions, but not in this book.
mix
(mix, mixed, mixed)
You put water and wine into the same glass at the same time you are
mixing them. Once things are mixed it is very difficult to separate them
again.
