come out
For many, many years being gay was a heavily-guarded secret. Now, in
most countries, it is no longer illegal, but it is still often a cause for shame.
When a homosexual gathers his courage and publicly declares what he is,
we say that he or she has come out (of the closet - a secret hiding-place).


She or he has come
out
in the open.
Two-word verb without an object
No problem.
come out in
Imagine your body has an infection or some other kind of illness inside.
Sooner or later it could come
out
of your body in unlovely scabs or boils.
You have come out in boils. We can also say, 'The King has just
broken
out in
horrible boils.'
Three-word verb
No problem.
come out with
'Kathleen is quite mad, you know. You should hear some of the things
she comes out with.'
A great genius was once asked how he had so many ideas. He said that
he had only
come up with
one idea in his lifetime. But once the idea is
expressed, it is
out
in the open for everyone to see.
One day an angry teacher wanted to know who had painted the door
handles with sticky paint. He shouted, 'Who did it? Come out with it!'
To come out with something usually means to confess it, or to give some
other information unexpectedly.
Three-word verb
No problem.
come round
The boss has just phoned me. He was very nice and he asked me to
come round to his office. Now I'm worried. He was too friendly.
Round
in many verbs means 'approximately here' or 'here, but not
urgently' For example, 'come to my place' is direct, but 'come round to
my place' is more relaxed.
call round

drop round
,
call by
,
come by
and
drop by
all have the same
meaning.
But there is another way we use this verb.
Jill fainted at her daughter's wedding, but a few minutes later she came
round.
She is conscious now. In a sense, she is here now.
‘Jill’s come round.’
‘Jill’s
come to’
These mean the same.


Compare this with
bring round
somebody with a smell of ammonia.
Two-word verb without an object
No problem.
