behind with her work, and she has to work long hours to
catch up

Three-word verb
No problem.
fall down
A badly-constructed building can fall down. By analogy, so can a badly-
constructed argument.
Mr Archer's lawsuit against a newspaper for defamation - for printing lies
about him - fell down when it was discovered that he had paid bribes to
the important witnesses.
Two-word verb without an object
No problem.
fall for
An email came for Mr Wally telling him about a fortune in Nigeria. He fell
for it and paid several thousand euros to help his new friend bring the
money to Europe. Poor Mr Wally!
When we fall for someone we fall in love with them. They are beautiful,
kind, funny and intelligent. They are wonderful and everything they do is
perfect. Everything they say or think is perfect......
But this is not Paradise or the Garden of Eden. Some people make
mistakes, some people tell lies, and some other people believe them.
Inseparable two-word verb

fall in
I leave this to your imagination. What can someone fall in that is really
unpleasant and disagreeable? It smells really bad, too!
'I thought Walter was going fine, but then he fell right in it.'


This means that we can all laugh at Walter.

Uncle Tom used to be such a nice man, but he fell in with a bad crowd.
He started choosing bad people as friends. Notice that it is easier to fall
than to rise.
Three-word verb
No problem.
fall off
We often use
off
to mean being away from the target, or the hope.
When we look at a graph, we often imagine that the lines have weight,
that it is easier to go down than to go up. The sales figures of a company
can show this. When a product is becoming less popular, we say that
demand has fallen off.
Two-word verb without an object
No problem.
fall on
They fell on him like a pack of wolves.
(A gang of them together attacked him until he was on the ground)
On
can be aggressive.
Imagine a ton of sand fell on you. You would be buried and helpless. If
you are attacked by many people at once, you have the same situation.
You can't defend yourself.
They fell on him like a ton of something smelly.
