calm
(calm, calmed, calmed)
To relax, to tranquilize, to sedate, and so on. This verb is not often used
on its own.
calm down
The image here is the sea. A calm sea does not have high waves, or
winds at high speed. The wind drops to a breeze, and the waves settle
into a low swell. The sea is calm.
With an emotional person, who maybe is too excited for his own good, it
is often the time for his friends to tell him to calm
down
.
It is also possible, if you are the right kind of person, to calm somebody
down.
When it takes an object, it is a
separable two-word verb

carry
(carry, carried, carried)
The basic idea of carry is to transport or to take something from one
place to another. Usually we carry something that has some weight. For
example, we could
take
a pen from one room to another, but we would
carry a sack of wood that weighed some kilos.
Sometimes, what we are carrying is not so much heavy as important.
Happy mothers carry babies.
