Hurricanes and Tornadoes
As noted in Figure 6, there are three stages of a hurricane, and specific front office pro-
cedures are applicable to each. Fortunately, ample time is generally available to prepare for
hurricanes, and front office personnel can follow the hotel’s procedures for dealing with
them. Damages associated with hurricanes include flash floods caused by torrential rain
and sea surges (tidal waves). Extremely high winds can damage buildings, uproot trees,
break electric power lines and telephone lines, and turn loose objects into dangerous mis-
siles. Lightning associated with hurricanes can cause fires and power failures.
Unlike hurricanes, tornadoes can occur with relatively little advance warning. It
is, imperative, therefore, that hotel employees be prepared to warn guests quickly. If
practical, telephone calls should be placed to guestrooms:
