few inquire about a hotel’s safety precautions when making a reservation. Instead, most
guests assume that procedures are in place to adequately protect them during their visit.

In the past, this lack of proactive concern may have been acceptable or, at least, explain-
able. In today’s world, however, hoteliers and guests must be aware of potential prob-
lems, know how to avoid them, and be able to address them if they occur.
Directors of security know that their staff must always stay alert to potential
problems and resolve them as they arise. They will be very interested in short-term
occupancy information generated by the PMS, because additional security personnel
are usually scheduled as the number of rooms sold increases. PMS reports useful to
security department personnel typically include these:
