The costs of staying in or using the products and services provided by a full-
service hotel vary widely from fairly inexpensive to extremely expensive. Nevertheless,
most industry observers identify full-service hotels as being in either the mid-price,
upscale, or luxury segments of the lodging industry.
Mid-price full-service hotels are popular. Holiday Inns, the largest chain within
this segment, is credited by most observers with founding the hotel franchise concept in
the United States. In many smaller cities, one or more mid-price full-service hotels serve
as community centers to host the area’s business-related meetings, local political gather-
ings, weddings, anniversary parties, and other celebratory events. Mid-price properties
appeal to travelers who desire the services offered by a full-service hotel, but who also desire
rental rates only slightly higher than their limited-service hotel alternatives.
