Define profoundly what Referential, functional and operational approaches to the meaning are. Comment on the major distinctive features between them. Provide examples for each approach.

In the referential approach, comprises the interrelation of linguistic signs with categories and phenomena outside the scope of language. The great stumbling block in referential theories of meaning has always been that they operate with subjective and intangible mental processes The functional approach maintains that the meaning of a linguistic unit may be studied only through its relation to other linguistic-units and not through its relation to either concept or referent.




  1. There are two main types of word meaning: lexical and grammatical. Analyze these types with the help of examples.


According to words semantic structure they have lexical and grammatical meaning. Lexical meaning is words dictionary meaning with another words their denotational meaning. Lexical meaning is individual meaning. Grammatical meaning is the meaning conveyed in a sentence by word order and other grammatical signals. Also called structural meaning. Lexical meaning is individual meaning. For example chair – it is an object for sitting. However grammatical meaning is the meaning of the whole group or subgroup. For example, the the class of nouns has the grammatical meaning of thingness or the class of verbs has grammatical meaning of action. Linguists distinguish grammatical meaning from lexical meaning that is, the dictionary meaning of an individual word. For instances, in the words playing football, have played and good play - the word play have different grammatical meaning such as verb, noun , participle. The general grammatical meaning is the meaning of the whole word-class, of a part of speech. Grammatical meaning of the word is the part of meaning that varies from one inflectional form to another (as from plays to played to playing) .
