opened an online course for undergraduate students when the 4th Industrial
Revolution and AI were introduced in World Economic Forum in 2016. It can be
interpreted that it has been replaced by education fostering creative thinking and
producing managers who will be masters of AI, not replaced by AI.
4. Professional competencies observed from personal experience.
When
I
wanted a job, what mattered to me was not the company, but the function of overseas
marketing as I wanted to build a universe in the ruins of chaos, in a beautiful
harmony with those who lived in different areas. Thus, I had opportunity to work in 4
overseas branch offices and 5 project sites.
1) Learning and thinking
In the absence of computers and smartphones, almost all employees in big
companies read newspapers on the way to and from office. However, I read books all
day long. A round-trip commute, lunch time etc. I read one book every two days. I
was happy to be able to buy books with a salary from the company. I did not watch
TV during the week. Even if the Internet and smartphones have appeared, I did not
use them unless absolutely necessary. I decided to learn, think and live my own life.
Head office organized telexes from around the world and after management
discussions, instructions were provided in a hierarchical order. My principle was to
work intensively and finished on time without overtime work. It was important to be
aware of what I was doing staying awake every moment. I worked with the methods I
liked and realized it was a real learning field where my thought development and
consciousness expanded while learning various lives in the world while performing
my lovely job.
2) Ownership
Although I was an employee, I was the owner of myself, and lived with the
concept of extending the term if I was satisfied with my work every year. I have
never known who assessed my performance during my 24-year career.
This was possible because work abroad was either a matrix organization at site
or independent organization at branch office, therefore, it was not an authoritative
and hierarchical organization as was in the head office. I was able to manage my
work voluntarily.
3) Teamwork
I was assigned in Malaysian plant site in 1993. My job was diverse as a project
coordinator. I was in charge of all external works outside construction site, relations
with local government offices, and contracts with the owner etc. In order to work
together from matrix organization, it was important to have a friendly relationship.
To do this, instead of sitting at the desk, I tried to find a way respecting other
perspectives.
Teamwork is one of the most important competences. “I once asked Jeff
Bewkes, the CEO of Time Warner, what skill was most useful in business that was
not taught in college or graduate schools. He immediately replied, ‘Teamwork.’ You
have to know how to work with people and get others to want to work with you. It is
