The line graph gives data about the transportation
of goods in the UK using
road, water, rail and pipeline from 1974 to 2002.
It is clear that the quantities in all modes of transport witnessed different
fluctuations, with increasing trends on an overall picture. While road was the
main means to transport goods in the country, pipeline was the least popular
option.
Turning to details, approximately 70 million tonnes
of goods in the UK were
transported on roads in the initial year. This figure had increased noticeably by
the final year, with almost 100 million tonnes of goods being transported by this
means. In contrast, pipeline was used to transport only marginally 5
million
tonnes of goods at first, but over the following years saw an increasing pattern
in this figure, and the year 2002 reported more than 20 million tonnes.
Regarding the other remaining modes of transport, the numbers for water and
rail were almost compatible at 40 million tonnes in 1974. The gap between them
started to widen over the next years,
with the former rising, while the latter
seeing downturn. By 2002, the quantity of goods in the UK transported via water
had reached well above 60 million tonnes, more than 10 million higher than the
figure for rail mode.

Over the last few years, the number of people
who suffer from gaining
unnecessary weight has been on the rise, which is disproportional with the
trends of health and fitness levels. While sedentary lifestyle and heavy reliance
on unhealthy food options are to blame for this, promotion of being physically
active could be the main way of dealing with the issues.
Regarding the underlying factors, the first one has to do with leading inactive
way of life. Undeniably, many modern employees are conducting their work just
sitting in the office staring at computers or dealing with documents, reducing
their physical activeness. Not only at work, but also in almost every area of life,
this can be observed. While commute
is often by means of vehicles, even
games have shifted from outdoor environment into virtual world. Another is
eating too much fast food. That preparing nutritious meals at home requires
time, effort and money means many are resorting to other food options, albeit
at the expense of their health. The result is that they are gaining extra weight in
their body, which is a root for other diseases.
That being said, with the government being involved, the problems above can
be addressed. For one thing, authorities can use their power to promote health
benefits of active lifestyle on TV publicity or other mass media. This would
include a stimulation to cycle and walk more for travelling purposes instead of
relying on vehicles, for example. For another thing, it is heavy taxes on fast food
chains that play a key role in reducing its consumption. If these industries are
imposed
a considerable tax, then this will be reflected in the cost of their
products, making such foods unaffordable for many. As a result, consumers will
not show a big preference for unhealthy foods due mainly to their high price,
which may contribute to improving public health.
To conclude, increasing obesity levels are attributable to being less physically
active and consuming much fast food, while this
issue can be tackled in two
ways. Not only may raising public awareness about active lifestyle help in doing
so, but also heavy taxes on fast food companies are what proves to be effective.
