Sherlock Holmes

Charles H Lester – Toured the UK provinces with The Bank
of England from 1900 (see John F Preston).
H Lawrence Leyton – Appeared on the UK tour of
William Gillette’s play Sherlock Holmes from August 1905.
Rupert Lister – Featured in the 1923 UK provincial tour of
Doyle’s play The Speckled Band.
Vasily Livanov – Muscovite actor (son of Boris Livanov, once
described as the Russian Olivier) who starred in several well-
made adaptations for Russian television made by Lenfilms.
Titles include: Acquaintance (1979), Sherlock Holmes and Doctor
Watson  (1979), The Bloody Signature (1979), The Adventures of
Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson (1980), The Hound of the
Baskervilles (1981), The Treasures  of Agra (1983) and The Twentieth
Century Begins (1986).
Roger Llewellyn – Starred in Chris Martin’s version of The
Hound of the Baskervilles at the New Vic, Newcastle-under-
Lyme, in the summer of 1997; and then in David Stuart Davies’
one-man play Sherlock Holmes – The Last Act!, first performed at
the Salisbury Playhouse on 18 May 1999. He has since toured
with this play in Britain, Canada, America and elsewhere.
John Longden – British leading man of the 1930s. In 1951,
he starred in a film version of The Man with the Twisted Lip, the
first in a proposed series for television by the British company
Vandyke Pictures. The series never got made, so the film
languished in the cinemas as a supporting feature.
