The data on study of the genus 
Stachys
L. taxonomy in the Old World are discussed. The investiga-
tion was carried out on the basis of different morphological methods. The data of molecular phylogenetic 
studies were taken into account. Our opinions coincided on the understanding of the independence of the 
genus 
Betonica
(it is not closely related to 
Stachys
), and some other positions, but we believe that the in-
crease of the 
Stachys
circumscription up to 500 species including
Sideritis
, 
Stenogyn
e, 
Haplostachys
, 
Phyl-
lostegia
, 
Prasium
and other genera is questionable. The genus 
Stachys
is considered here in the strict sense. 
According to our data, 
Stachys
in the Old World includes 240 species and 37 subspecies, divided into 28 sec-
tions and 18 subsections. In Eurasia there are 165 species and 34 subspecies; in Africa – 75 species and 3 
subspecies, in Madagascar – 13 species. Some species are common of Eurasia and Africa. The most im-
portant diagnostic characteristics are those of life forms, verticillasters, presence or absence of bracteoles, 
minute details of corolla, calyx, nutlets, pubescense and others. The natural range of the genus in the Old 
World covers the greater part of Eurasia and Africa except the Arctic, northern and desert regions. In this 
area, the genus has several centers of species diversity, the main are: Mediterranean-South-West Asia (more 
than 120 species), South Africa (more than 40 species), Madagascar (13 species, a half of them without clear 
affinities) and some others.
