Cladistic analysis of nucleotide sequences of 
matK
gene confirm the monophyly of tribe 
Baphieae
and polyphyly of the genus 
Baphia
. The latter genus, apparently, should be subdivided into a number of gen-
era. In our opinion, one of the segregate genera should be based on the subgenus 
Macrobaphion
, which in-
cludes taxa that are more closely related to the genus 
Airyantha
than to the genus 
Baphia
. The genus 
Dal-
housiea
probably can be distinguished as a separate subtribe. 
Bowringia
and 
Baphiastrum
, perhaps, can be 
united into one genus. In contrast, the generic status of 
Leucomphalos
was confirmed.
