, as the scientific 
discussion in the theoretical literature focuses mostly on clear-cut examples 
and avoids the broader issue, which demand deeper insight into the 
comparative analysis.

Synonymy refers to the phenomenon in which words having different phonological 
forms come to reflect similar notions. As many linguists point out, the distinction 
between synonyms is, however, not as clear-cut as it might look at a first glance.
The main aim
of the present research is to investigate into the origin of 
synonymy as a language phenomena, based on the analysis of a synonymic set 
with the head-word “smart” in English and its correlation with the similar set in 
the Uzbek language.
In order to achieve the aim of the research, the following 
tasks
have been 
identified: 
1. To review the basic interpretations of the term 
“synonymy”
 
in 
linguistics in order to outline the distinctive features of this notion;

2. To establish a range of the issues central to the concept “synonymy” 
with a view to their relevance; 
3. To analyse the synonymic set /row with the head-word ‘smart’ in 
English and its corresponding synonymic set in the Uzbek language, in order to 
present systematic rules and conventions governing the use of the members of 
this synonymic row in both languages; 
4. To attempt to describe synonymic relations based on the interpretation 
of synonymy in Cognitive Linguistics.
