Childhood behavioural disorders
One of the reasons for subtyping conduct
disorders is to try to separate those young people
who are likely to grow out of their behaviour
problems from those who persist with such
behaviours into adulthood. DSM-IV refers to
the number and intensity of symptoms as clinical
indicators of severity. Other relevant factors
include the presence of overt (confrontational,
such as fighting) versus covert (hidden, such as
theft) symptoms, comorbid mental health disor-
ders, particularly ADHD, and early symptoms of
antisocial personality disorder [7].
The presence of callous-unemotional traits,
characterized by a lack of empathy for others,
lack of guilt and inability to express emotions to
others, does appear to signify a distinct subgroup
of young people with a more extreme pattern of
aggressive behavioural problems [8].
