Corpus callosum and other white
matter tracts
The corpus callosum (CC) is the largest white
matter structure in the brain and controls inter-
hemispheric communication of a host of processes,
including, but not limited to, arousal, emotion and
higher cognitive abilities. With the exception of
one study, decreases in CC volume have consis-
tently been reported in maltreated children and

adolescents compared to non-maltreated peers [1].
Recent studies that have employed diffusion tensor
imaging (DTI) have found differences in mal-
treated children in frontal and temporal white
matter regions, including the uncinate fasciculus,
which connects the orbitofrontal cortex to the ante-
rior temporal lobe, including the amygdala (e.g.
Ref. [9]). The extent of the white matter differ-
ences observed by Govindan and colleagues was
associated with longer periods within an orphan-
age and may underlie some of the socio-emotional
and cognitive impairments exhibited by maltreated
children.
