ing loans. The IMF was at risk of becoming irrelevant

until the subprime financial

crisis. With the subprime financial crisis, the IMF s role as an international lender

The debate on whether the world will be better off with the IMF operating as

an international lender of last resort is currently a hot one. Much attention is being

focused on making the IMF more effective in performing this role, and redesign

of the IMF is at the centre of proposals for a new international financial architec-

ture to help reduce international financial instability.
