LEARNING ENGLISH THROUGH TRAVELLING
‘The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page’
-saint Augustine
Want to improve your language, or are you bored with using the same
conservative styles and ways to enhance your language? If so, in this article I’m
going to introduce one of the best ways to learn English as well as speak in this
language as native speakers.
What is the importance of learning English through travelling?
As they say ‘so many people, so many opinions’. The issue of learning and
improving English skills provokes disputes and discussions and nowadays we face
different problems in finding the best way of English enhancement. As for me we
tried a lot of methods and only some of them suited us and were of real help in
solving this problem. The article’s main aim is to find the best way for learning
English not English but through this method people can learn more than one language
as well.
The usage of English language has become significant in our daily life. It is the
fact that English has been used more globally than before, many countries’
government use English as the formal language to carry out their businesses and to
complete their paper works. Life demands communication to exchange information
as well as to receive messages from every sphere of our society. Language,
especially, English is inevitable. We want to learn language in a short period of time
because life itself demands this from us. We tried traditional as well as modern
technologies for enhancing English, like reading, doing a lot of exercises, watching
movies, thinking in English, writing short stories even singing songs in English. We
also attended courses where we could practice and work in groups. At first it was
enough for communication and communicative skills development. But when we
work in the field of translation we merely face the problem of not being capable of
quick response to native speakers. We understand almost everything they told us but
can’t respond properly or have to ask them to repeat what is said or it takes time think
over or figure out. Now we realize that it is time to find the most effective way of
enhancing speaking skills and speaking fluently. The idea is striking to me that we
can go abroad of course it had been thought before me so, I’m not going to say it is
my idea, but we should support this way of learning. Why not learn through
experience, if the source of this language I mean the natural zone where people speak
in this language, is abroad let’s pack our stuffs and we can explore the world and
discover the capacity within us. But before going abroad we should know some tips
or just rules. For Human being the best things are always should be natural, we can
only feel true happiness and can find peace of our heart in the embracement of nature
or just in the open air. Through my experience I come to conclusion that the best
learners are those who experienced in real life, did the chores themselves and who put
things into practice. Considering these factors language can be obtained through
283
experience more favorably, through TRAVELLING. The Earth is filled with infinite
experiences, wonders and once-in-lifetime opportunities. Much of the education is
experienced in a classroom or through a textbook; we are so limited and surrounded
with ourselves, we do monotonies exercises and chores if one who wants to discover
the world or to realize one’s identity should avoid from his comfort zone. the world
can broaden our cultural, spiritual, and intellectual education like we could have
never imagined.
Let’s survey pros and cons of travelling itself then we can combine it with
study.
But as well with plusses of travelling there can be some problems with it. First of all,
travelling means a huge sum of money for some families, and not everyone finds
enough time or they push it for the next and we don’t know what are waiting for us in
a foreign country. [1]
Thanks to globalization travelling abroad for different reasons increased
considerably. People want to take the exciting adventures to discover the new lands,
meet new people and enjoy from food and culture here. It brings enthusiasm while
travelling in new countries people may suffer from culture shock but it doesn’t last
long. Travelling can increase our knowledge and widen our perspective. To view new
customs, different ways of living is fantastic for our mind it helps us to change some
habits and even to create a new one.
TRAVEL TIPS FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE ABROAD:
--Take an English speaking country for travelling;
-- Make friends as you could in order to exchange information;
--Don’t restrict yourself from native speakers;
--Be aware of media and broadcasted latest news and try to figure out it;
--Speech is prime means of communication so never feel shy to show your attitude to
something; [4]
If we encourage travel for education, we possibly develop tourism.
The modern person has received unlimited possibilities to contact with
representatives of other cultures. It means that in present conditions cross cultural
284
communication is carried out in different spheres of human life: economic, political,
military cooperation, different cultural exhibitions, festivals, studying abroad,
fashion, sport and travelling. The phenomenon of cross cultural communication
represents great scientific and practical interest. The significance of the issue should
be concerned more often by government. the president of Uzbekistan not only trying
to develop outer tourism but also internal tourism. The role travelling abroad in the
modern world is enormous as we have the possibility not only have a rest but to
enrich ourselves with new knowledge and experience but also with cultural, historical
and communicative plans. [1]
An experiment on this issue
A group of researchers started their experiment in 2013 when they understood the
necessity of language practice and improvement. At first they went to such countries
as the United Arab Emirates and Cyprus for a short period of time (7-9days) because
they wished to start from simplified visa formalities. This part of the experiment
turned out to be successful .in both places they met a lot of native citizens who didn’t
speak English perfectly and of course there were a lot of visitors from other English –
speaking countries like America or Britain with whom they had some opportunities to
communicate a little bit. They were impressed by the fluent speech of native
speakers, they became engrossed in another culture and felt a part of it. they began
not only understanding all that said, but also accustomed the natural speed of native
speakers even could thing in English without any barriers. It became easy to
express their thought and react to questions from other speakers. Their short stay
helped them to enhance communicative skills and learn a lot not only about other
countries , but also about the English language as well which wasn’t achieved so well
like this through traditional methods of learning the language .They weren’t afraid of
making mistakes while speaking and felt free to start any conversation with
foreigners .in one word their short stay helped them to achieve their aim to enhance
English communicative skills and as a result they could translate at work without any
difficulties, and I think this is a good example of learning through travelling.[2]
All in all, we discussed the importance of travelling abroad for enhancing
communicative skills.
So, the aim of this article ‘to find the best way of improving communicative
skills in English and prove that travelling abroad can be considered one of the means
of speaking skills development’ was achieved as I showed that travelling abroad can
give positive results and lessens language gaps between different race of people. I
think most important is to overcome language divide. The findings also show that
nowadays people have more possibilities and more willing to travel abroad in order
not only to have holidays but also to receive new knowledge and enhance
communicative skills. In future this kind of learning a new language will be a
common thing. Travelling not only teaches us a new language but it can mean for us
more than this it is just one of the side of the matter, through travelling we can
wonder the grace of Earth and we feel ourselves one of the part of the great process.
As for me, if in fate I’m gonna to travel the holy places of Earth it will give me
spiritual support. The people who got the tickets of travelling will have the keys to
many questions. My point for the issue is that the way how to gain the language is
285
simple, how emerged native speakers? How they learned the language? Through the
atmosphere, am I right? So, if language is social work let’s learn it through the
community of that language spoken nation.
