From three pillars to five UNECE working areas 
The three pillars of sustainability ‐ economic, social and environmental ‐ are closely linked, 
and a policy distinction is neither possible nor beneficial. Consequently UNECE works in five 
inter‐related  transport  areas  covering  the  three  pillars  of  sustainable  development.  The 
linkage  of  the  five  working  areas  to  the  three  dimension  of  sustainability  is  presented  in 
table 1.1.
