The sounds produced with the air - passage not blocked but narrowed are called constrictive consonants. Constrictive consonants may be:
Fricative consonants (or noise consonants) [ f, v, h, z, s, ɵ, θ, ð, ʃ, ӡ ]
Constrictive sonorant:. [ w, j, r, l ]
The sounds produced with the stream of air first stopped before the closure, then released with some friction are called occlusive - constrictive consonants or affricates. They are: [tʃ, ʤ ]
According to the place of obstruction the consonants are divided into the following groups:
Labial consonants:
1a. bilabial consonants [ p, b, m, w ]
1b. labio - dental consonants [ f,v ]
Lingual consonants:
fore lingual consonants:
apical consonants [ t, d, n, l, s, z, ɵ, ᶞ,]
cacuminal consonants [ r ]
medio - lingual consonants is [ j ].According to the place of obstruction this consonant is called palatal.
