AUSTRALIAN VARIANT OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE
Aim: to introduce the peculiarities of Australian English.

  1. Activating background knowledge. What factors influenced on the development of Australian English? How the Australian English is different from British or American variants of English?

  2. Watch the video about the differences between Australian and British English. Comment on the video. Speak about the specifics of Australian vocabulary. Are there any diminutive forms in this variant of English language?

  3. Gabriel Clark is an English teacher with 14 years’ experience and an MA in TESOL and Applied Linguistics from Portsmouth University. Read the text about research done by Gabriel Clark.

So I did some research and found that there are hundreds and hundreds of Australian English words and phrases, and a lot of them are used every day. So you’ll need to know them to survive here!
I found that there are 6 categories with lots of unique Australian words and phrases:

  1. Positive phrases — Australians are famously relaxed and positive, so it’s not surprising to find a lot of positive Australian words and phrases.

  2. Negative words and phrases for people — Australians enjoy making fun of each other. These phrases aren’t so aggressive — just fun ways of pointing out people’s downsides.

  3. Jobs — There are lots of Australian words for jobs.

  4. Words and phrases about drinking — There’s a big drinking (alcohol) culture here and some great phrases related to it.

  5. Places and things — There are a lot of things and places that have interesting Australian names.

  6. Clothes — Many items of clothing have special Australian names for them, too.

  1. There are some words of Australian English vocabulary from the research by G.Clark. Match the words with their definitions.

The list of positive phrases:

Bloody ripper

When I heard this for the first time, I was buying a bottle of wine, and the sales guy said it as he was handing me my change. I thought it was a complaint. “Maybe I should’ve made it more challenging for him,” I thought. “I should’ve paid in five-cent coins or something.” Actually, this one just means “Sure! No problem!”.
